Portaging Etiquette

When you are out canoeing/kayaking and you come to a portage, you may not always see other people along your travels, but if you do, here are some good portaging etiquette tips

  • When you meet someone along the portage coming from the opposite direction, the person carrying the canoe should always be given the right away
  •
  • You packs and canoes should be tucked away to the side of the take out and put in areas. This can help prevent traffic build up for other people wanting to use the portage
  •
  • If you find you are holding up other people behind you, take a second to move to the side to allow them to pass by
  •
  • Double check for any forgotten pieces of gear at the take out put in areas and for any garbage that may have been laying around
  •
  • If nature calls along your portage, please relieve yourself well off the trail and at least 300 feet from the water source
  •
  • Always smile and say hello to everyone you pass along the way
